Let's now take a closer look at female tennis players

Female tennis players, just like men’s tennis, have experienced significant changes over the years. The most significant, as pertaining to the current game, is the addition of power to the women’s game. The first real glimpse that pro tennis got of this power tennis was with Monica Seles in the early nineties. This was the first time that one of the female tennis players was completely overpowering some of her opponents on the court. Capriati notably did some of the same, but it wasn’t really until the Williams sisters came around that power tennis truly evolved. In the mid-1990s, Martina Hingis was dominating women’s tennis, and it was in 1997 that one of the Williams sisters first appeared on the scene. Hingis was still able to fend off Venus by beating her in the finals of the US Open, but both Venus and Serena soon proved to be just too strong, the two of them completely dominating all of the female tennis players for the following six years.

Venus and Serena have won six and eight grand slam singles titles, respectively, and they controlled the first part of this decade until two Belgian girls, Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin, appeared on the scene and ready to go. Jennifer Capriati also made a very impressive comeback in 2001, winning the Australian Open and the French Open. Lindsay Davenport was consistent as well, attaining the number one ranking, but the only women’s tennis player who has really been at the top of the game without any major setbacks or surprise losses in the majors has been Justine Henin. French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo had a fantastic year in 2006, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the same year. I must say it is quite interesting, though, to see all the battles for the big crowns and the top ranking in women's tennis, because throughout the history of women’s tennis, we have seen so many great players completely dominate the game, such as Margaret Court, Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf. Therefore, it is good to see some neck-and-neck competition, and with so much media attention on the game since Anna Kournikova, it is the dream of many a young girl these days to make it big in women's tennis. That is why we see so many young girls come up through the ranks, and right now there is a good collection of young stars, such as Anna Ivanovic,

Jelena Jankovic, and Maria Sharapova.
