Apr 10, Davis Cup coming up!

This weekend is the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup, and it features some really interesting matchups. Rafael Nadal is playing for Spain against Germany, a strong Czech Republic team is taking on last year's finalists Russia who boast an in-form Nikolay Davydenko; Sweden will struggle against Argentina, and the most interesting of all is France against the defending champions, USA. I will be attending this tie in Winston-Salem, NC, and I will keep you informed, and post some pictures and video clips.

Apr 4, Interesting twists at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami

I didn't think I'd be saying this in my lifetime, but Andy Roddick beat Roger Federer tonight. It was a very well-played match, and Roddick certainly deserved it with the way he was serving. I do pick Nadal to win the tournament, though. On the doubles side, the South African team of Coetzee and Moodie couldn't pull out another victory today against the Bryan brothers, and they lost 6-1, 6-4. I think this might be the Bryans' first tournament victory of the year.

Apr 3, South African doubles team rising fast

The South African dubles team of Jeff Coetzee and Wesley Moodie is quickly on the rise in the world rankings. By no means rookie doubles players (Moodie won Wimbledon with Stephen Huss in 2005 and Coetzee has been in the top 30 consistently), the two recently teamed up and they have already made it to the Australian Open semi-finals. This week in Miami at the Sony Ericsson Open, they defeated the tough Brazilian team of Melo/Sa, and followed that up with a victory over the US Open champs, Frenchmen Clement/Llodra. They now face the Bryan brothers, who are yet to win a tournament in 2008, in the semi-finals.

Mar 31, Anderson's dream run comes to an end

South Afrian upstart Kevin Anderson has finally run out of steam after a thrilling week in Miami. The 21-year old beat Agustin Calleri in the first round, which already made that the highest ranked player Anderson has ever beaten, and he followed that up with an astounding victory over world number three Novak Djokovic. In the third round, the consistent play of Russian Igor Andreev proved too much for Anderson, and although he was able to win the second set, he could not pull through to the end. The final score: 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4. This tournament will boost Anderson closer to the top 100 in the world and if he gets there, he will become the first South African player since Wesley Moodie in 2005 to do that.

Mar 31, Canas outlasts Gonzalez in tense encounter

In a very well-fought South American rivalry this evening at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Argentine Guillermo Canas was just too solid for Chilean Fernando Gonzalez. There were many amazing, marathon-style points, with Gonzalez relying on his slice backhand to keep him in it and his huge forehand to finish off the point. Canas was also banking on his forehand heavily, but he has enough speed and stamina to consistently run around it and dictate the point by taking advantage of the weak Gonzalez backhand. Canas will now take on the winner between Kevin Anderson and Igor Andreev.

Mar 29, South African Anderson shocks the tennis world by beating Djokovic

21-year old Kevin Anderson shocked world number 3 Novak Djokovic, along with everybody else in the tennis game, when he defeated the Serb 7-6(1), 3-6, 6-4. This was Kevin's third ATP main draw appearance. He qualified for the Australian Open this year and lost in the first round, and he reached the finals of the Tennis Channel Las Vegas Open, with wins over Michael Llodra and Robby Ginepri. This is by far his biggest win, however, as Djokovic is the defending Sony Ericsson Open champion and the current Australian Open titleholder. Anderson is originally from Johannesburg, and he has completed three full years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While he was there, he maintained a consistent top 5 NCAA ranking, reached the semi-finals of the NCAA Cahmpionships in 2007, the doubles finals in 2007, and he won the doubles title in 2006. This will most certain garner the South African number 1 player the much deserved attention of the tennis world, and hopefully launch him into the top tiers of the men's game.

Mar 25, Men's tennis heating up in Miami

This week is going to be extremely exciting in the men's game. Roger Federer, while still comfortably ahead at the number one spot in the game, is showing signs of being human, as he lost to number 98 in the world, Mardy Fish, last week in Indian Wells. The tournament starts on Wednesday, and all of the top ten will be there again. I personally think Roger will at least get to the finals this week, hopefully win it, but I have to admit that I am slightly biased towards the Swiss superstar. Stay tuned, it will be broadcast on Fox Sports Network (FSN) and CBS here in the States.

Mar 4, Federer loses in Dubai

Roger Federer keeps the tennis world worried and excited about possible change, by losing in the first round of Dubai 2008.

Yes, the man himself, Roger Federer, lost to Andy Murray today in the first round. I am, I believe, one of the staunchest, most stubborn supporters of Federer, but even I believe that 2008 might be a less-than-spectacular year for Roger. In all honesty, though, I think that if he wins nothing else but the French Open, that would make the year worth it.

In other ATP news, the Tennis Channel Las Vegas Open also started today, and Lleyton Hewitt, the number two seeded Australian, found out the unfortunate news that he would be the one to face wild card Marat Safin. Safin, the Russian who is currently number 65 in the world, but a former number 1, is the type of guy who doesn't quite resemble the notion of a consistent, even-keeled temperament. So even though he is only 65th in the world, he could beat absolutely anybody on a given day.

I will keep you updated on the week's events, as the tennis caendar gets very interesting from here on in, with the northern hemisphere heating up and the U.S warming up the players for the European circuit. Check back soon for more news and insight.
